In cash games, GTO mostly means chip EV: maximize the chips you expect to win. In tournaments the target is different. You are paid on finishing position, so a chip won is worth less than a chip lost, and the right play depends on the payout structure, the bounty structure and how many players remain. That gap between chips and dollars is the reason tournament theory is its own field.
Solver access also got faster this year. On September 16, 2026, GTO Wizard announced Preflop ICM Solving for Ultra subscribers. It covers up to 9 players, stacks up to 250 big blinds and fields up to 4,096 entrants, across standard MTTs, satellites, PKOs and mystery bounties. This roundup collects the tournament ideas that solver work and published GTO research support, format by format.
ICM (the Independent Chip Model) converts your stack into prize equity. Its core lesson is convexity: doubling your stack does not double your equity, while busting costs you all of it. That is why the same hand can be a call in a chip EV model and a fold near a pay jump.
What ICM theory supports in practice:
Run bubble and final table spots through an ICM tool and review your own leaks by stack depth. Our online poker tournament tips for 2026 covers how to structure that review.
This is the most misunderstood GTO result in tournaments, and the easiest to act on. GTO Wizard's ICM analysis of late registration shows that when players bust before you sit down, the prize pool they leave behind is redistributed and your fresh stack is worth more than the buy-in.
In GTO Wizard's worked examples, a late entrant in a standard payout structure has a seat worth about 10.9% more than the buy-in, and in a flat-paying satellite structure about 29.76% more. Read these carefully:
The gain comes from eliminations that already happened, so registering later captures more of it than registering at the start, provided you still have the stack depth you need. The math for that trade-off is worked through in Late Registration Poker EV.
The same logic reverses in progressive knockouts. GTO Wizard's PKO late registration study simulated a 1,000-entrant $100+$100 PKO and found a starting stack loses about 14% of its value by the time a typical late registration window closes with 30% to 35% of the field remaining. Bounties on eliminated players are already gone from the pool, while your stack still starts at the same size.
The GTO-backed adjustment is to flip your timing. In PKOs, be seated at the start so you can collect bounties from hand one, and treat late reg as a poor default. GTO Wizard's bounty model write-up also frames future bounty value as proportional to your share of the chips, which is why covering opponents matters more in this format.
Profitmaxxer handles this with PKO pre-registration alerts, which fire before the tournament starts rather than during late reg.
Mystery bounties reverse the PKO result for a structural reason. GTO Wizard's mystery bounty guide explains that bounties typically activate when the money bubble bursts or later, and before that you play like a regular non-bounty tournament. It also states that late registration is a profitable endeavor in mystery bounties because the closer you start to the bounty phase, the more likely you can win bounties without roadblocks.
Its framework for the bounty phase is to value bounties as the average bounty remaining: remaining bounty prize pool divided by remaining players. Because the bounty phase starts late, ICM is a significant factor, so ranges widen as they do in a PKO with ICM pressure, not without limit. The full breakdown is in our mystery bounty tournament strategy guide.
In a flat-paying satellite every winner gets the same prize, so chips beyond what secures a seat add nothing. That makes satellite strategy the most ICM-driven of all formats: survival is worth more than accumulation once you are safely above the cutoff. It also fits GTO Wizard's satellite example, which shows the largest late reg seat equity gain of the structures in its article.
Every idea above is about playing better once you are in. Overlay is about choosing which tournament to enter. An overlay exists when a tournament's guaranteed prize pool is larger than the buy-ins collected toward it.
A simple illustration: a $10,000 guarantee with $10 per entry going to the prize pool and 800 entries has $8,000 collected. The average entrant now has $12.50 of prize money behind each $10 of prize pool contribution. Add ICM seat equity from late entry on top, and a late entry into an overlay tournament stacks two separate edges.
The problem is scale. Hundreds of tournaments run across a dozen networks at any moment, and no one can watch every late reg window while multi-tabling. This is what Profitmaxxer was built for. Its scanner checks 12 poker networks every 30 seconds and sends overlay alerts and Max Late Reg alerts to Telegram. As of September 2026, the scanner has logged $45.9M in cumulative overlay across 76,757 overlay instances in 189 days of running. The live stats page updates daily. There is a 7-day free trial with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
| Format | GTO-backed adjustment | Late reg? | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard MTT | Apply ICM pressure at bubbles and pay jumps | Yes, seat worth about 10.9% more than the buy-in in ICM equity (worked example) | GTO Wizard |
| Satellite | Protect the seat once safe | Yes, about 29.76% more seat equity (worked example) | GTO Wizard |
| PKO | Value stack size for future bounties, cover opponents | No, a late starting stack loses about 14% of its value | GTO Wizard |
| Mystery bounty | Play as a regular event before bounties activate, then use average bounty value | Yes, closer to the bounty phase is better | GTO Wizard |
| Any overlay tournament | Enter when the guarantee exceeds collected buy-ins | Combine with late entry timing | Prize pool arithmetic |
No. The seat equity gain is real in standard and satellite formats in GTO Wizard's analysis, but PKOs are the exception, and the gain in any format depends on the payout structure and how many players have busted.
