PKO Poker Term Explained: Bounties, Math and Late Reg

What does PKO mean in poker?

PKO stands for Progressive Knockout, a tournament format where part of every buy-in becomes a bounty on that player's head, and the bounty grows as you eliminate opponents. It also changes late registration: GTO Wizard's ICM analysis found that in a PKO "a late starting stack loses about 14% of its value" (source: https://blog.gtowizard.com/the_hidden_cost_of_late_reg_in_pkos/). In a standard MTT the same analysis finds a late entrant's seat is worth about 10.9% more than the buy-in in ICM seat equity, so PKOs are the one common format where arriving late works against you.

In a regular tournament, the whole buy-in (minus the fee) goes into one prize pool, and you are paid only for finishing in the money. In a PKO, the buy-in is split into two parts: a prize pool contribution and a bounty. Every player starts with a bounty on their head. When you knock someone out, you collect part of their bounty in cash immediately, and the rest is added to your own bounty.

The most common structure is a 50/50 split, though sites vary and you should always check the tournament lobby. Here is a worked example using a $22 PKO with a $10 prize pool contribution, a $10 bounty and a $2 fee:

  1. You start with a $10 bounty on your head.
  2. You knock out a player whose bounty is $10.
  3. You receive $5 in cash straight away.
  4. The other $5 is added to your bounty, which is now $15.
  5. The next player to knock you out collects half of that $15 bounty and absorbs the rest into their own.

That growth is the "progressive" part. A player who has eliminated several opponents becomes a walking target, and a deep run in a PKO can pay a large share of its return in bounties before you ever reach the final table.

PKO terms every player should know

PKO tournaments come with their own vocabulary. Most of it shows up in lobbies, hand histories and strategy articles.

Term Meaning
PKO Progressive Knockout. Bounties grow as you eliminate players.
Bounty The cash value attached to a player, paid to whoever eliminates them.
Bounty split How a bounty is divided on a knockout. Commonly half is paid in cash and half is added to the winner's bounty.
Covering Having a bigger stack than an opponent, so you can eliminate them and win their bounty.
Bounty multiplier How many times the buy-in portion a bounty is worth. Used to judge calling ranges.
Mystery Bounty A format where bounty values are hidden and drawn from a prize ladder, rather than shown on each player.
Bounty hunter A player who calls wide specifically to win a large bounty.
Pre-registration Entering before the tournament starts, rather than during late registration.

Why PKO strategy differs from a standard MTT

Because every knockout pays cash, a bounty is worth chasing even when a call looks marginal by chip equity alone. Calling ranges widen when you cover a player with a large bounty, and shoving ranges tighten when a short stack behind you is likely to call with a wide range to win yours. Early in the tournament, when most bounties are close to the starting value, the effect is modest. It grows as bounties inflate.

Late registration in PKOs: the exception to the rule

For most formats, registering late is a real advantage. GTO Wizard's ICM study on late registration (source: https://blog.gtowizard.com/the-icm-benefits-of-late-registration-in-poker-tournaments/) reports these ICM seat equity gains, not ROI figures:

Format Late entrant seat vs buy-in (ICM seat equity)
Standard MTT About 10.9% more
Flat-paying satellite About 29.76% more
PKO About 14% less (separate study)

The PKO result comes from GTO Wizard's separate article on the hidden cost of late registration in PKOs. The reason is mechanical. Every starting stack in a PKO carries a bounty, and a player who registers late has missed the early period in which bounties could have been collected and grown. They also hold a starting stack, while the field already contains chip leaders with inflated bounties on their heads and the chips to cover you. You are buying a seat that has lost value before you sit down.

The practical takeaway is to register for PKOs before they start, or early, and to save your late registration for standard MTTs and satellites. Overlay in PKOs

An overlay happens when the guaranteed prize pool is larger than the buy-ins collected, so the organiser has to add money. In a PKO, the overlay applies to the prize pool portion, which means the guarantee can be underfunded while the bounties are paid out separately. A PKO with a real overlay gives you two sources of value: extra money in the prize pool and the cash from the bounties you win.

Spotting this by hand means watching registration counts against the guarantee across several lobbies at once. Most players only check when they remember, and the window often closes before they come back to it.

How Profitmaxxer handles PKOs

Profitmaxxer scans 12 public poker networks every 30 seconds: GGPoker, Americas Cardroom, PokerStars, PokerStars.es, 888poker, WPT Global, iPoker Network, CoinPoker, TigerGaming, SwC Poker, QQPK and Stake Poker. It sends overlay alerts and Max Late Reg alerts to Telegram.

Because of the late-entry penalty described above, PKOs are treated differently from other formats. Instead of alerting you during late registration, Profitmaxxer sends pre-registration alerts for PKOs, so you can enter before the start and keep the full starting stack and bounty. You can set how many minutes before the start you want the alert, a minimum guarantee and your buy-in range. For standard MTTs and satellites, the Max Late Reg alert tells you how many minutes remain before registration closes.

Frequently asked questions

What does PKO stand for in poker?

PKO stands for Progressive Knockout. It is a tournament format where each player carries a bounty, and eliminating a player pays you part of their bounty in cash while the rest is added to your own.

How does a PKO bounty split work?

Most PKOs pay half of the eliminated player's bounty to you in cash and add the other half to your own bounty. Some sites and tournaments use different splits, so check the lobby rules before you register.

Is it good to late register a PKO?

Generally not. GTO Wizard's ICM analysis found that a late PKO starting stack loses about 14% of its value, whereas late entry into a standard MTT is worth about 10.9% more than the buy-in in ICM seat equity. Entering before the start, or early, is usually the better approach.

What is the difference between a PKO and a Mystery Bounty tournament?

In a PKO, each player's bounty is visible and grows as they eliminate others. In a Mystery Bounty tournament, bounty values are hidden and drawn from a prize ladder. The two formats play differently, and GTO Wizard has a separate guide to Mystery Bounty at https://blog.gtowizard.com/mystery-bounty-guide/.

Can overlay exist in a PKO?

Yes. If registrations fall short of the guaranteed prize pool, the organiser adds the difference, which creates an overlay on the prize pool portion. You can then win that extra value on top of any bounties you collect.
