Treat every rebuy and add-on as a fresh purchase of chips at a price you can calculate, and buy only when the chips are worth more than they cost. GTO Wizard's analysis of late registration at blog.gtowizard.com shows why timing matters: in its worked example, the buy-in gives "an immediate 10.9% increase on the amount you bought in for," which is ICM seat equity, not ROI. Rebuy events stack a second timing question on top of that one, because the rebuy period decides how many times you can buy chips and how much of the field has already been eliminated.

In a rebuy tournament you can buy more chips during a set rebuy period, usually the first few levels. Most rooms allow a rebuy only when your stack is at or below the starting stack, and many offer a double rebuy when you are busted. At the end of the period there is typically an add-on, a one-time chip purchase, often at the first break after rebuys close. Rules vary by site and by event, so always read the lobby details for rebuy limits, add-on price and chips, and the exact moment late registration closes.
Every dollar spent on rebuys and add-ons goes into the prize pool, so the prize pool of a rebuy event grows beyond buy-ins alone. That has a direct consequence for registration timing and for overlay.

A rebuy is a decision about price, not about pride. Use this illustrative example (hypothetical numbers, not a quote from any site): a $20 rebuy gives you 10,000 chips, and your stack just dropped to 3,000 at the beginning of the second level with the average stack at 12,000 chips.
The question is whether the equity in a 13,000-chip stack minus the equity in a 3,000-chip stack exceeds $20. In a deep-stacked early level the chips you buy are usually worth close to their face value, because ICM pressure is low and the extra chips let you play real poker. Rebuying with a short stack early is typically +EV when you have a skill edge. The same rebuy near the end of the rebuy period is different: blinds are bigger, fewer hands remain before the period closes, and the price per effective big blind goes up.
Three practical checks before you click rebuy:
The add-on usually arrives at a break, when stacks are standardized by blind level and the price is fixed. For most players with an average or short stack, an add-on at a fair chip ratio is the easiest +EV decision in the format, because you are buying chips at a price the structure was designed to make attractive. The exception is a stack that is already very large relative to the add-on chips, where the marginal chips are worth less than their face value. Check the chip ratio against the starting stack: if the add-on gives you more chips per dollar than the starting stack did, it is a bargain.
Late registration in a rebuy event splits into three situations.
Registering at the start. You get the full rebuy period, the most flexibility, and you also face players who may rebuy aggressively, which means more gambling early.
Registering late but inside the rebuy period. You enter with a starting stack while some players have already rebought and hold bigger stacks. You can still rebuy when your stack falls to the threshold. In GTO Wizard's analysis, late entry into a standard tournament is attractive in ICM terms because the field has already shed players while you pay the same buy-in. GTO Wizard's worked example shows about 10.9% more seat value than the buy-in in a standard tournament and about 29.76% more in a flat-paying satellite, both ICM seat equity, not ROI. Rebuy events are not covered by that article, so treat those figures as a direction, not a rebuy-specific number.
Registering at the very end of late reg. If late reg closes after rebuys end, you may sit with the starting stack and no rebuy option. You gain the most ICM seat equity from eliminations, but you lose the ability to re-buy chips after losing a flip. The cost to you is lower flexibility, so compare the two honestly rather than assuming late is always better. For most formats, our guide to the best time to late register poker tournaments explains how to pick the window.
If you play deep structures, deep stack poker tournament strategy covers how a late entrant should treat the stack depth that many rebuy events start with.
Do not carry a late-reg habit into bounty events. The same GTO Wizard research on late registration in PKOs finds that a late starting stack loses about 14% of its value, because each elimination removes a bounty from the prize pool. A PKO with rebuys compounds this. Register early, or before the start, and rebuy decisions follow the same price-per-big-blind logic as above.
A guaranteed rebuy tournament that fails to fill its guarantee has an overlay: the prize pool, including rebuys and add-ons, is below the guarantee. Overlay is easiest to evaluate before the add-on break, when you can estimate how many rebuys and add-ons will still be purchased. If the field is thin and the guarantee is large, each additional entry, rebuy and add-on adds money that the room has to match anyway, so the extra cost is partly funded by the operator.
Profitmaxxer scans 12 poker networks (GGPoker, Americas Cardroom, PokerStars, PokerStars.es, 888poker, WPT Global, iPoker Network, CoinPoker, TigerGaming, SwC Poker, QQPK and Stake Poker) every 30 seconds. According to Profitmaxxer's own scanning, it has recorded $63.5M in overlay over 223 days, across 95,989 overlay instances. That is Profitmaxxer's tracked data, not an independent audit, and individual results vary by format and buy-in. For detail on where the largest ones show up, read the biggest poker tournament overlays.
Profitmaxxer sends overlay alerts and Max Late Reg alerts to Telegram, including how many minutes of registration remain. That matters in rebuy events, where the late-reg deadline and the end of the rebuy period often fall close together. Pricing is $49/month, locked for life while subscribed, with a 7-day free trial with full access and a 30-day money-back guarantee. It can be, because rebuys and add-ons let you buy chips at a fixed price while the structure adds money to the prize pool. Whether it is +EV for you depends on your edge over the field and on whether you buy chips at a fair price per big blind. Rebuying with no edge is a losing play like any other.
Late registration can add ICM seat equity, as GTO Wizard shows for standard tournaments, but a rebuy event changes the cost because you lose some or all of the rebuy window. Compare how many levels of rebuy you will still have against how many players have already busted. Avoid late entry in PKO versions.
Take it when the add-on chips per dollar are at least as good as your starting stack and your stack is not already very large. For most average and short stacks the add-on is a fair or better purchase. Always check the exact chip ratio in the tournament info.
Yes. If the prize pool, including rebuys and add-ons, is below the guaranteed prize, the tournament has an overlay. Because rebuys and add-ons arrive late, the final pool is not known until the add-on break.
