Tournament ROI is the profit you make per dollar invested, including rake. Every tracker, spreadsheet and web calculator uses the same core formula:
ROI % = (Total winnings − Total buy-ins including fees) ÷ Total buy-ins including fees × 100
Two details trip people up. First, "buy-in" must include the entry fee. A $50+$5 tournament costs $55, so your denominator is $55 per entry. Second, re-entries and rebuys count as new buy-ins. Leave them out and your ROI is inflated.
This guide gives you a calculator you can build in two minutes, worked examples, and a way to judge how much your result means. It then covers two inputs most calculators ignore: overlay and late registration timing.

You do not need an app. Open any spreadsheet and set up these cells:
| Cell | Input | Example |
|---|---|---|
| B1 | Tournaments played | 200 |
| B2 | Total buy-ins plus fees ($) | 4,000 |
| B3 | Total cashes ($) | 4,600 |
| B4 | Profit | =B3-B2 → 600 |
| B5 | ROI % | =(B3-B2)/B2*100 → 15% |
| B6 | Average buy-in | =B2/B1 → $20 |
| B7 | Profit per tournament | =B4/B1 → $3 |
Paste your numbers into B1 to B3 and the rest updates. If you grind across several sites, add one row per site and sum the columns. That per-site split often shows which lobbies are paying you and which are only paying rake.
ROI alone can mislead. Track these as well:
A 15% ROI over 200 tournaments says very little. Tournament results are dominated by a few big cashes, so the spread of outcomes is huge.
You can estimate your own uncertainty:
Standard error of ROI ≈ SD of per-tournament ROI ÷ √(tournaments played)
The standard deviation depends on your field and format, and you can calculate it from your own results export. As an illustration only, assume it is 400%. After 200 tournaments, the standard error is 400 ÷ √200 ≈ 28 percentage points. A reported 15% ROI could then reflect a true ROI anywhere from roughly −40% to +70% at about two standard errors. At 10,000 tournaments the same assumption gives 4 points.
The practical rule: do not rebuild your game, change stakes, or judge a coach based on a few hundred tournaments. Compare ROI across big samples, and treat small samples as noise.
Your historical ROI is backward-looking. Two forward-looking factors change the expected value of a specific entry before you click register: overlay and registration timing.
An overlay happens when a tournament's guarantee exceeds the prize money collected from entrants. The operator adds the difference. Here is an illustrative example, not a real tournament:
If you enter as the 81st player, the pool stays at $5,000 for 81 entrants. An average-skill player's equity is $5,000 ÷ 81 ≈ $61.73 against a $55 cost. That is about +12.2% expected ROI on that entry before any skill edge, and it comes from the overlay alone. Without overlay, an equal-skill entry loses the fee on average, so overlay is a rare case where the format itself is on your side.
The catch is that overlay shrinks as players register, and it is often largest near the end of late registration. You need to see the tournament at the right moment. For more on where this shows up, read our guides to GGPoker overlay tournaments and 888poker satellite overlay.
GTO Wizard's ICM analysis of late registration found that a late entrant's seat is worth more than the buy-in in terms of tournament equity. These are ICM seat-equity gains, not ROI figures:
| Format | Late entrant's seat value vs buy-in | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MTT | About +10.9% | GTO Wizard |
| Flat-paying satellite | About +29.76% | GTO Wizard |
| PKO | A late starting stack loses about 14% of its value | GTO Wizard |
The PKO row matters. Late registration hurts there, so the better play is to register before the tournament starts. Plugging a blanket "late reg is +EV" assumption into your calculator would overstate your expected return in PKOs. For timing detail across formats, see our data-backed guide to the best time to late register.
Extend your spreadsheet with a second tab for the entry you are considering:
| Input | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Total cost | Buy-in plus fee |
| Guarantee | Advertised prize pool |
| Current prize pool from entrants | Entries × prize portion of buy-in |
| Overlay | =MAX(0, Guarantee, Current pool) |
| Equal-skill equity | =MAX(Guarantee, Current pool) / (Entries + 1) |
| Baseline ROI | =(Equal-skill equity, Total cost) / Total cost |
The result is a floor-style estimate for an equal-skill field. It ignores rake on rebuys, bounty structures and payout shape, so use it to rank spots rather than to predict your exact return. If you also have a skill edge, your own historical ROI sits on top.
The math is the easy part. The hard part is that you cannot watch every lobby while multi-tabling. Overlays appear and shrink, and late registration windows close while you are mid-hand.
This is the problem Profitmaxxer solves. It scans 12 poker networks (GGPoker, Americas Cardroom, PokerStars, PokerStars.es, 888poker, WPT Global, iPoker Network, CoinPoker, TigerGaming, SwC Poker, QQPK and Stake Poker) every 30 seconds and sends two kinds of alerts to Telegram: overlay alerts and Max Late Reg alerts. You can filter by buy-in range, minimum overlay and format.
According to the live stats page, as of 16 October 2026 the scanner had detected about $59.9 million in total overlay across roughly 90,900 instances over 215 days. That works out to about $658 per instance, which is my own division of those two published totals. That is the overlay posted in those tournaments, not profit paid to any individual player. What you capture depends on which spots you enter and how you play them. For scale, see the biggest poker tournament overlays.
