There is a near-universal rule in tournament poker: late registration is good for your ROI. GTO Wizard's research puts the average edge at roughly +9.4% for standard multi-table tournaments. But there is one format where that rule flips completely, and getting it wrong quietly bleeds your bankroll: progressive knockout (PKO) tournaments.
In a regular MTT, the early levels are low-value. Blinds are tiny relative to stacks, the play is loose, and your skill edge is diluted by deep stacks. Late registering lets you skip that low-EV phase and concentrate your play into the levels where decisions actually matter. That is the entire logic behind the +9.4% figure.
PKOs split the prize pool into two parts: the regular prize pool and the bounty pool. Every player carries a bounty, and a portion of each bounty you win is paid to you immediately, while the rest is added to your own head. The math that makes late reg profitable in normal MTTs works against you here.
When you late register a PKO, dozens of players have already busted, which means their bounties are gone. You paid into the bounty pool with your buy-in, but you never had the chance to collect the bounties of everyone who busted before you arrived. That is dead money you funded and can never recover. GTO Wizard's analysis found late registering PKOs runs at approximately -14% ROI, and it gets worse the later you join.
For PKOs, the correct move is the opposite of late reg: register on time, or pre-register before the tournament starts. You want maximum exposure to the full field of bounties, including the recreational players who bust early and donate their heads. Entering from level one means every bounty in the field is still live and collectable.
The practical problem is that across multiple sites and hundreds of running tournaments, telling PKOs apart from regular MTTs and tracking each start time manually is nearly impossible. That is exactly the gap a pre-registration alert closes: you get pinged before high-value PKOs begin so you capture every bounty from hand one.
Profitmaxxer tracks tournament registration windows across 10 poker networks and pings you on Telegram at the optimal moment to enter, with PKO pre-registration alerts handled separately. Set your buy-in range and sites once.
