Most tournament players track ROI per buy-in. ROI tells you what you earn on money risked. It says nothing about what you earn on time spent, and time is the scarcer resource for anyone grinding a full schedule.
Two players can post the same 10% ROI and earn very different amounts. One plays 40 tournaments a day. The other plays 15 and spends hours scrolling lobbies. Your hourly rate is the number that decides whether poker pays better than the alternative use of your evenings.
The basic formula is simple:
Hourly rate = (average buy-ins played per hour × average buy-in × edge per buy-in) − costs per hour
Every lever in tournament poker maps to one of those terms. This guide covers the three that most players leave untouched: when you register, which tournaments you choose, and how much of your session is spent searching instead of playing.

When you register at the start, you pay the full time cost of the tournament. When you register near the end of the late registration window, you skip the early levels, where you are deep-stacked and where, as a rule, most of the field is still intact.
This matters for two separate reasons.
A late entrant plays fewer hours to reach the same stage of the tournament. If your edge per tournament stays similar, fewer hours for the same expected profit means a higher hourly rate. This is the time efficiency argument, and it is structural rather than a matter of skill.
GTO Wizard's ICM analysis of late registration found that a late entrant's seat is worth about 10.9% more than the buy-in in a standard MTT, and about 29.76% more in a flat-paying satellite. These are ICM seat equity figures, which measure the value of your stack and position in the prize structure. They are not ROI. Full details are in GTO Wizard's article on the ICM benefits of late registration.
The reason is mechanical. Entrants who bust early leave their money in the prize pool, and a late entrant gets a full starting stack without having risked it through the early levels. You pay the same buy-in and hold a stack that is worth more.
The numbers below are a hypothetical built from the GTO Wizard seat equity figure. The hours are assumptions for illustration. Your own tournaments will differ. The table also isolates the structural gain and leaves out your skill edge.
| Register at start | Register at end of late reg | |
|---|---|---|
| Buy-in | $50 | $50 |
| ICM value of your seat | $50.00 | about $55.45 (10.9% above buy-in) |
| Structural gain | $0 | about $5.45 |
| Assumed hours to play | 6 | 4 |
| Structural gain per hour | $0 | about $1.36 |
Add your normal skill edge to both columns and the late entry still has the advantage on time and on seat value. Run this across a full day of entries and the gap compounds, which is the point of treating registration time as a decision rather than a habit.
Two honest caveats. First, a shorter stay is not free: late entrants face shorter effective stacks relative to the field in some structures, so you need to be comfortable playing a shallower game. Second, the 10.9% figure applies to the standard MTT format studied. It does not apply to every format, which brings us to the exception.
Progressive knockout tournaments reverse the logic. GTO Wizard's analysis found that a late starting stack in a PKO loses about 14% of its value, because the bounties on early eliminated players have already been collected by others. Details are in their article on the hidden cost of late reg in PKOs.
For hourly rate, this means one rule: do not apply a blanket late reg habit across your whole schedule. In PKOs, register on time or early. Profitmaxxer handles this by sending pre-registration alerts for PKOs instead of late reg alerts.
| Format | Late registration effect | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MTT | Seat worth about 10.9% more than buy-in (ICM seat equity) | Register late, near the close of the window |
| Flat-paying satellite | Seat worth about 29.76% more (ICM seat equity) | Strong candidate for late entry |
| PKO | Late starting stack loses about 14% of its value | Register before the start |

Late registration improves the value of the seat you buy. Overlay improves the value of the pool you buy into.
An overlay exists when a tournament's guaranteed prize pool is larger than the buy-ins collected. If a $20,000 guarantee has only $16,000 in entries, the $4,000 shortfall is added money shared among the players who did enter. Combining overlay with late registration is the strongest version of the hourly rate strategy, because you enter a tournament with added value and you enter it late.
The timing is where most players lose the edge. Overlay is only certain once registration has closed, and by then you cannot enter. The practical skill is estimating whether a tournament is heading for an overlay while there is still time to register. That requires watching registration counts against the guarantee across lobbies, which is hard to do by hand.
For reference on the scale, see Biggest Poker Tournament Overlays: The Real Numbers.
Time spent scrolling lobbies is time with an hourly rate of zero. If you spend 20 minutes of each hour looking for soft spots, a third of your hour is dead time before you consider playing speed or multitabling limits.
A simple audit shows the size of the problem:
Many players find the search cost is larger than the cost of any leak they have ever studied.
Profitmaxxer is a scanner built for exactly this problem. It checks the lobbies of 12 poker networks (GGPoker, Americas Cardroom, PokerStars, PokerStars.es, 888poker, WPT Global, iPoker Network, CoinPoker, TigerGaming, SwC Poker, QQPK and Stake Poker) every 30 seconds and sends two kinds of alert to Telegram:
The scanner's running totals are public. Across 220 days it has logged $62.5M in overlay over 94,161 overlay instances, which works out to roughly $660 per instance on average. Those are totals across all tournaments and buy-in levels, and the figures update daily on the live stats page. Your own results depend on which buy-ins you play and how often you can act on an alert.
You can filter by buy-in range, minimum overlay percentage, satellite toggles, speed and currency, so a $5 to $30 grinder does not receive alerts for $500 events. The point of the filters is to protect your time: an alert is only useful if you can act on it, and a feed of irrelevant alerts costs you hours instead of saving them.

Hourly rate improves when you raise value per entry and lower the time each entry costs. Late registration does both in standard MTTs and satellites: GTO Wizard's ICM work puts the seat equity gain at about 10.9% and about 29.76% respectively, while PKOs are the exception at roughly a 14% loss in starting stack value. Overlay adds value to the pool, and automation removes the dead time of searching.
None of this removes variance, and none of it replaces good play. It changes the structure around your play so that more of your hours are spent in spots with an edge. For the timing side in more depth, read Best Time to Late Register Poker Tournaments: A Data-Backed Guide.
