An overlay happens when a tournament's guaranteed prize pool is larger than the buy-ins collected. If a tournament guarantees $5,000 and the field has paid in $4,000, the $1,000 gap is overlay. Every player in the field shares that extra money, so each entry is worth more than its buy-in.
The iPoker network is run by Playtech. It hosts many separate poker brands, called skins, on one shared player pool. Industry coverage puts the number of active skins at around twenty as of 2025, including Bet365, Betfair Poker, William Hill, Betsson, Betsafe, Paddy Power and Svenska Spel. Skins come and go, so check the current list in your own client before you build a routine around one.
That structure matters for overlays. Many iPoker tournaments are guaranteed by the network and run on a shared pool, while others are run by a single skin for its own players. A guarantee set for a busy evening can look thin on a quiet one, and that is where overlays tend to appear.
Overlays are a mismatch between a promised prize pool and the players who actually show up. On iPoker, a few factors make mismatches more likely:
None of this means every iPoker tournament is an overlay. It means the spots exist and are easy to miss because you have to look at the right lobby at the right time.
Late registration lets you join after the tournament has started. Windows depend on the event type and the skin. When iPoker introduced late registration, the windows scaled with tournament speed: faster structures closed sooner and slower, special events stayed open longer. Treat any figure you read online, including older reports, as a starting point. Open the tournament details in your own lobby to see the exact registration close time.
Late reg is where overlay and timing meet. The prize pool is guaranteed, the field is still growing, and you can see how many entries have been paid for. You are making a decision with more information than the players who registered at the start.
GTO Wizard's ICM analysis of late registration found that a late entrant's seat carries more equity than the buy-in. In a standard MTT, a late seat is worth about 10.9% more than the buy-in, and in a flat-paying satellite about 29.76% more. These are ICM seat equity figures, not ROI. They do not predict your results, because they measure the value of the stack position under ICM, not your skill edge. The full study is here: The ICM Benefits of Late Registration.
There is one important exception. In progressive knockout (PKO) tournaments, GTO Wizard found a late starting stack loses about 14% of its value, because the bounties on the players who have already busted are gone. Details: The Hidden Cost of Late Reg in PKOs. For PKOs, register before the start instead.

Use this quick check before you register.
| Check | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Guarantee | The stated prize pool | Your baseline for the overlay |
| Entries so far | Paid entries including re-entries | Tells you how much money is in the pool |
| Buy-in minus rake | Net amount per entry that reaches the pool | Rake reduces what each entry adds |
| Registration close | Minutes left in late reg | Sets your deadline |
| Format | Freezeout, re-entry, PKO, satellite | PKOs are the exception to late reg |
| Rest of the field | Whether strong players are registered | Overlay is not the same as a soft field |
Take the guarantee and subtract the money collected after rake. If a $10,000 guarantee has 800 entries at $11 with $1 of rake, the pool collected is $8,000, leaving a $2,000 overlay. That is $2.50 of extra value per entry already in the field. Each new entry adds $10 to the pool and shrinks the overlay by that amount, so overlay value per entry changes as the field grows.
Remember that overlay is the prize pool shortfall, not a promise of profit. You still need to play well.
An overlay can disappear while you are looking at it. A tournament that is $1,500 short at the start can fill as late registrants arrive, and a tournament that looked full can lose its overlay if entries stall. The deciding information arrives in the final minutes of registration, and that is also when you are most likely to be playing other tables.
This is the practical problem for multi-tablers. You can watch one lobby. Watching several skins plus other networks at the same time is not realistic.
Profitmaxxer scans 12 poker networks every 30 seconds: GGPoker, Americas Cardroom, PokerStars, PokerStars.es, 888poker, WPT Global, iPoker Network, CoinPoker, TigerGaming, SwC Poker, QQPK and Stake Poker. It sends two kinds of alert by Telegram:
According to the live Profitmaxxer stats page, the scanner has detected about $56.95 million in total tournament overlay across 85,855 instances in 205 days of scanning, across all 12 networks. That works out to roughly $660 per instance on average, but those totals are network-wide. They are not an iPoker-specific figure, and your own results will vary with the buy-ins and sites you play.
You can filter alerts by buy-in range, minimum overlay percentage, site, speed and currency, so an iPoker player is not buried in alerts from sites they never open. PKOs are handled differently, with pre-registration alerts before the start, in line with the GTO Wizard finding above.
The offer: $49 per month, locked for life while you stay subscribed, with a 7-day free trial and full access. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee. Membership is capped at 30 paying members, and after that new sign-ups join a waitlist.
If you also play on other networks, these guides cover the same approach for different sites:
They occur, but how often depends on the skin, the guarantee and the time of day. Check your own lobby over a few weeks and log what you find rather than relying on a general claim.
For standard MTTs and satellites, GTO Wizard's ICM analysis shows a late seat holds more equity than the buy-in. For PKOs, it does not. Check the format first.
No. Overlay measures the prize pool, not the opponents. A tournament with overlay can still have strong players in it.
You can find overlays by hand in a single lobby. A scanner helps when you play several skins or networks and cannot watch the registration clock on all of them.
