An overlay exists when a tournament's guaranteed prize pool is larger than the buy-ins collected. If a tournament guarantees $10,000 and the field has paid in only $8,000 when late registration closes, the room adds $2,000 to the prize pool. Every player in the field shares that $2,000 on top of their own money.
For a tournament player, that means each entry is worth more than the buy-in. The size of the edge depends on how big the overlay is relative to the number of entries. A $2,000 overlay spread over 100 entries adds about $20 of expected value per seat, before skill is considered.
WPT Global is a good place to look for these spots because it runs a large daily schedule with many guarantees. Some of those guarantees are set optimistically for the traffic the room gets at off-peak hours. Late registration there usually stays open for around two to three hours, according to PokerFuse's overview of the WPT Global schedule, and the exact number of levels differs by event. Always confirm the late reg window in the lobby for the specific tournament.
Overlay tournaments and late registration go together for two separate reasons.
First, you can see the overlay before you commit. Early on, nobody knows whether a tournament will reach its guarantee. Near the end of late reg, the prize pool is nearly final, so you can tell whether the field is short of the guarantee and by how much.
Second, late registration has a structural benefit of its own. GTO Wizard's analysis of ICM and late registration found that a late entrant's seat is worth about 10.9% more than the buy-in in a standard multi-table tournament. In a flat-paying satellite the figure is about 29.76% more. These are ICM seat equity gains, not ROI, and they come from the fact that you skip early levels where chips can be lost without ICM pressure. The full write-up is in GTO Wizard's article on the ICM benefits of late registration.
When an overlay is added on top of that seat equity, the two effects stack. For background on timing, see Best Time to Late Register Poker Tournaments: A Data-Backed Guide.
Not every WPT Global tournament is a good late reg. In progressive knockout (PKO) tournaments, bounties are split into the prize pool and every player starts with a bounty on their head. GTO Wizard's research on the hidden cost of late registration in PKOs found that a late starting stack loses about 14% of its value. You can read it at The Hidden Cost of Late Reg in PKOs.
In practice:
Before registering late into any overlay tournament, run through a short checklist.
Multiply the buy-in, after rake, by the current entries (including re-entries) and compare the total to the guarantee. If the guarantee is higher, the gap is the current overlay. Remember that more players may still register before late reg closes, which shrinks it.
A large overlay with 90 minutes of late reg left will probably get filled in by the field. The same overlay with 10 minutes left is much more likely to stay. Late reg timing is the main uncertainty, and it is why overlay checks need to be repeated, not done once.
Late in the window, the average stack in bigger-blind tournaments is deeper in big blinds for early entrants than for you. A stack of 30 big blinds is playable, but a stack of 10 is a very different game. Check blind levels, not only the overlay figure.
A flat or top-heavy payout changes how the overlay shows up in your EV. Overlay raises everyone's equity in proportion to the payout structure, not only the winner's.
Overlay is calculated against the guarantee, but your cost is the full buy-in including the fee. Count it.
| Format | Late reg value | Overlay behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MTT / freezeout | Seat worth about 10.9% more than buy-in (ICM seat equity) | Overlay adds directly to every entry |
| Satellite (flat payout) | Seat worth about 29.76% more (ICM seat equity) | Overlay can appear when seats are guaranteed but fields are thin |
| PKO | Late stack loses about 14% of its value | Register before start if possible |
| Mystery bounty | Bounties don't unlock until later, so late reg costs little | Check the structure before registering |
Mystery bounty structures vary, so read the tournament lobby info instead of assuming. For satellites on another network, 888poker Satellite Overlay: How to Catch Free Value works through the same logic.
Profitmaxxer scans 12 poker networks every 30 seconds: GGPoker, Americas Cardroom, PokerStars, PokerStars.es, 888poker, WPT Global, iPoker Network, CoinPoker, TigerGaming, SwC Poker, QQPK, and Stake Poker.
As of the latest figures on the public stats page, the scanner has tracked about $55.7 million in total overlay across 84,426 overlay instances over 202 days of continuous monitoring. WPT Global accounts for 15,638 of those instances, the third-highest count among the 12 networks.
Two cautions on reading those numbers. They are historical totals across the full buy-in range and not a promise of what you will find on any given day. And an overlay instance is a tournament that was under its guarantee when the scanner saw it, not a profit you would have collected. Your result depends on which spots you pick, how you play, and variance.
For comparison, the biggest single overlays have been found on other sites. Biggest Poker Tournament Overlays: The Real Numbers covers them. WPT Global's value comes from frequency more than from a single huge spot, which suits players who register for several tournaments a day.
If you play four or five tables, you cannot also check a lobby for tournaments with 15 minutes of late reg left and a shortfall against the guarantee. That is the problem automated overlay detection solves.
Profitmaxxer sends two kinds of alerts to Telegram:
You can filter by buy-in range, minimum overlay percentage, and site, so a WPT Global player can scan only that network. PKOs are handled separately with pre-registration alerts that fire before the tournament starts, in line with the 14% stack-value finding above.
If you are comparing options, Best Tools for Finding Poker Tournament Overlays (2026) lays out the alternatives, including doing it by hand.
Overlay and late reg are edges, not guarantees. They improve the price you pay for each seat. Over many tournaments, a better price is what compounds.
It varies by tournament. Reports put it around two to three hours for many events, and some run 13 or 17 levels. Check the lobby for the specific event.
No. Check the format first. A PKO with a small overlay can still be a worse spot than a regular tournament with none, because of the stack penalty for late entry.
Not necessarily. An overlay means the prize pool is subsidised. The field's skill level is a separate question, and it is worth a look at the buy-in level.
