Stake Poker is the poker room inside the Stake.com crypto casino. It launched in 2024 with software built in-house, and players deposit and withdraw in crypto while amounts display in USD (Pokerfuse review). The room runs ring games and tournaments, and it has added a fast-fold format called Next! alongside large promotional campaigns (So Much Poker).
Overlay is a good fit for a younger room. Operators who want to attract players often publish guaranteed prize pools and headline events. In September 2026, Stake announced the Stake Showdown, a $1,000 buy-in event with a $125,000 guarantee (Pokerfuse). When a guarantee is larger than the buy-ins collected, the shortfall is overlay, and the room pays it. That shortfall is added value for every player in the field.
This guide explains how to read overlay in Stake Poker tournaments, when to register, and where an automated alert helps.
Overlay is a simple calculation:
Overlay = guaranteed prize pool minus total buy-ins collected (after rake)
If a tournament guarantees $10,000 and the field has paid in $8,000 toward the prize pool, the overlay is $2,000. Every entrant effectively receives a share of that $2,000 on top of the money they and their opponents put in.
The number is not fixed. It changes while registration is open:
An overlay you see mid-registration is therefore an estimate. The only figure that counts is the one at the close of late registration. Treat any early lobby number with caution, particularly in events that tend to fill in the last 30 minutes.
You can read the signals yourself before you sit down:
| Signal | Why it points to overlay |
|---|---|
| High guarantee versus buy-in | A large GTD needs many entries to cover it |
| Off-peak start time | Fewer players are online |
| Special or headline events | Guarantees are set to attract attention, and fields can fall short |
| Mid-week, non-promo days | Less traffic from promotional players |
| Late registration still open with few entries | The pool may not catch up before the close |
None of these is a guarantee. A field that looks thin at the start can fill in the last half hour. This is why timing and live data matter more than a hunch.
Late registration lets you enter after the tournament has started. Registering at the last allowed moment is called max late reg. It has two effects.
First, you skip the early levels where you would otherwise play deep stacks against a full field. Second, you can see how many players have registered and what the prize pool looks like before committing.
GTO Wizard's ICM analysis quantifies the first effect. These are ICM seat equity figures, not ROI:

Bounty tournaments work differently. GTO Wizard found that in PKOs a late starting stack loses about 14% of its value, because the bounty structure favors players who are in from the start (GTO Wizard, The Hidden Cost of Late Reg in PKOs). If a Stake bounty event has a large guarantee and overlay, the better move is usually to register before the start rather than at the late reg deadline. Overlay still adds value, but you take it from hand one.
The two ideas reinforce each other. A standard MTT with overlay gives you the late entrant's seat equity edge and the added prize money. The best spots tend to look like this:
The difficulty is that checking this by hand means refreshing the lobby on a schedule, and most grinders are playing other tables. A short window can pass while you are mid-hand.
Profitmaxxer scans 12 public poker networks every 30 seconds: GGPoker, Americas Cardroom, PokerStars, PokerStars.es, 888poker, WPT Global, iPoker Network, CoinPoker, TigerGaming, SwC Poker, QQPK, and Stake Poker.
For Stake Poker, the scanner does two things:
You can set filters for buy-in range, minimum overlay percentage, speed, currency, and satellite toggles. For bounty events, you can set pre-registration timing instead of late reg timing, based on the PKO finding above.
One caution applies to every overlay tool, ours included: a figure measured during registration is an estimate until registration closes. Use alerts as a prompt to check the lobby, then decide for yourself.
A short checklist before you click register on any overlay alert:
For how the same logic applies at other rooms, read GGPoker Overlay Tournaments: A Late Reg Guide and CoinPoker Overlay Tournaments: How to Find and Play Them. CoinPoker is also a crypto room, so the comparison is useful. To see what the largest overlays have looked like, read Biggest Poker Tournament Overlays: The Real Numbers.
Overlay happens whenever a guaranteed prize pool is not covered by the buy-ins collected. It depends on the individual tournament and field size, so the answer changes event by event. Checking live data at the close of registration is the reliable method.
Not always. Late reg raises your ICM seat equity in standard MTTs and satellites according to GTO Wizard, but PKOs are the exception, where a late stack loses about 14% of its value.
Yes. You can open the lobby, compare each guarantee with entries and buy-ins, and track the late reg clock. It takes time, and it is hard to do while playing.
